Sublime writing about the sublime Sauternes. Back in the day (way back - the 1970's) 'sweet sauternes' was the students' choice from UK off-licences. A disgusting but very cheap yellow wine you brought along solely to abandon surreptitiously in the kitchen at parties, in preference for something more drinkable.
Purely by chance bought a bottle of Sauternes from Booths( best northern supermarket ever) as Christmas treat- thinking oh that looks interesting. Now sipping on the Martin’s with last of Martini. Gorgeous Thank you!

Dear Mr Godwin,
May I refer you to the end of the introduction to Alice Lascelles' wonderful book - "The Martini".
"(I'm sure a few will have some of you throwing the book against the Wall and shouting 'That is JUST NOT A MARTINI!')"
Could we please have some real names for these recipes?
I remain, as I began, an admirer.
Strong unaged spirit + wine + herbs served extremely cold
is absolutely a Martini
